Vancouver Canucks fans flocked to social media on Sunday afternoon to express how they felt about the team trading Calder Cup Playoff MVP Arturs Silovs.
After signing Thatcher Demkoto a three-year contract extension, which begins ahead of the 2026-27 season, many were wondering what this meant for the future of Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs.
Silovs' name entered the rumor mill almost immediately after the Canucks announced the contract extension for Thatcher Demko and less than two weeks later, they completed a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins to give the 24-year-old an opportunity at the NHL level.
Vancouver Canucks fans share their feelings about team trading Arturs Silovs
In return for Arturs Silovs on Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks landed 22-year-old forward Chase Stillman, who will most likely end up in Abbotsford this season, along with a 2027 fourth-round pick.
"Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has acquired forward Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Arturs Silovs." the club said.
Understandably, some fans weren't too happy with the team's decision to trade Arturs Silovs this summer and took to the team's social media post to share their true feelings.
"So Pittsburgh gets the player with legitimate upside potential, and we get a mid-round lottery ticket in two years.
All this so we could give career backup Kevin Lankinen a 5 year, $22.5M contract?" @JRLV_Inc said.
Sure, Arturs Silovs is coming off an incredible performance during the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs, leading Abbotsford to their first-ever championship while earning MVP honors along the way, Patrik Allvin likely did the best he could in terms of the package he got.
It's also worth noting that Arturs Silovs is eligible for the NHL's waiver wire this season and there's almost a zero percent chance that he would've cleared at the end of training camp in early October, meaning the Canucks would've lost him for nothing.
With Arturs Silovs now gone, it's Nikita Tolopilo's time to shine in the starter role for the Abbotsford Canucks as he looks to lead them back to the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2026.
