Ahead of the trade deadline in March, there was a lot of talks whether or not the Calgary Flames would deal veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Ultimately, a trade never occurred, moving this possibility to the summer when it may be easier to make a deal.
On the 32 Thoughts podcast last week, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said that the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils have re-engaged on trade talks surrounding Jacob Markstrom. The two were speaking about a potential trade ahead of the deadline, but the Devils went in a different direction, adding Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens.
In addition to the New Jersey Devils, Friedman says that the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs have interest in the 34-year-old netminder.
Markstrom, a native of Gavle, Sweden, spent parts of seven seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before joining the Flames as an unrestricted free agent in 2020. In 48 games this season, Markstrom had a record of 23-23-2 with a 2.78 goals against average, a .905 save percentage and two shutouts.
With the Calgary Flames set between the pipes for the future with Dustin Wolf, it makes sense to try and move on from Jacob Markstrom this summer. The big question will be if they need to retain any salary on Markstrom's contract. He has two years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6 million.
