Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson has found himself in the center of trade rumors in the National Hockey League over the last little while, with the team reportedly going as far as exploring the market for both him and fellow forward J.T. Miller.
Now, while J.T. Miller is quite likely on his way out of Vancouver at some point before the trade deadline on March 7th, it doesn't appear that Elias Pettersson's time with the Canucks is coming to a close anytime soon, despite the rumors.
During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman shared several updates on the Vancouver Canucks, including that Elias Pettersson went to the team's management group to say he wants to remain with the club.
It would have been pretty tough for the Vancouver Canucks to find a trade partner to take on the entirety of Elias Pettersson's contract, which comes with an $11.6 million cap hit per year through the 2031-32 season.
Vancouver's preference to keep Elias Pettersson also shows that they believe in him and that he can be a leader from an offense standpoint for years to come and they know what he's capable of after three straight seasons of 30+ goals.
There's still time this season for Elias Pettersson to take things up a notch and prove to everyone why he's worth $11.6 million per year, but as of right now, it's been a pretty underwhelming campaign from him, registering just 29 points in 39 games.
Pettersson and the Canucks will look to turn things around and jump back into a playoff spot in the Western Conference when they face the Buffalo Sabres at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 7 pm PT on Sportsnet Pacific.
