As we quickly approach the start of the 2024-25 season, teams around the National Hockey League are beginning to figure out what their rosters will look like before the submission deadline of October 7th at 5 pm ET.
As part of that roster submission deadline, teams need to be cap compliant and can't be higher than the upper limit of $88 million for the 2024-25 season. For some teams, this means they'll need to make a move or two to become cap compliant by opening night, with one of those potentially being the Vegas Golden Knights.
In order to become cap compliant, the Vegas Golden Knights may look to trade for an injured player that they can place on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) for the regular season to get them under $88 million.
One team that could help out the Vegas Golden Knights is the Vancouver Canucks, if Patrik Allvin sees that he could benefit from this situation. The Canucks could trade Tucker Poolman, who isn't expected to play this coming season due to neurological complications from migraines that he's been dealing with for a couple of years now.
Poolman is entering the final year of his four-year contract that sees him earn $2.5 million annually. The Canucks could trade Poolman to the Golden Knights in exchange for a draft pick in 2025, potentially a third or fourth-rounder.
The Canucks have their own cap issues too that they'll need figure out heading into opening night as they only have according to PuckPedia, they only have $90,833 in available space.
We'll have to wait and see what other teams close to the cap have up their sleeve in the coming days and it could be pretty busy on the waiver wire and potential with trades as team's look to get under the $88 million upper limit.
