Canucks trade Vasily Podkolzin to the Oilers
It was to be expected the Canucks had a surplus of forwards, and with the team's latest addition, Podkolzin had gone down to the 13th or 14th forward on the team's depth chart.
With this trade, Patrik Allvin freed up another million on the team's salary cap and a contract on the team's 50.
Podkolzin, the team's 10th overall pick in 2019, joins Jake Virtanen and Olli Juolevi as top picks who never lived up to their expected ceilings.
The Canucks invested themselves in making Podkolzin a top-end winger, but their developmental strategies were never enough. Through the 137 Canucks contest he participated in, he gave the Canucks 18 goals and 35 points.
With additional money to dangle and two contracts freed up. This leaves Allvin plenty of room to make another signing, acquire another player, or even invite veterans on PTOs.
With the intention of being a cup-contending team for another season, the cap and contract space are far more valuable than Podkolzin's. Allvin could also decide to wait it out, see how the season plays out, and perhaps only add Tom Willander to his group of defensemen.
At this point, after everything he's done since taking over the team, we should be able to believe in his ability to make the right call for the Canucks.
