The Canucks' most urgent need has been identified
The Vancouver Canucks' most urgent need heading into the 2024-25 season has been identified.
As we head into the 2024-25 campaign, the Vancouver Canucks' roster is mostly set as only positioning within the lineup needing to be determined, likely in the final few games of the preseason.
However, when looking at the Canucks roster, they may still need to add at one position, that being on the blue line. While signing Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais were solid moves by Patrik Allvin from a depth perspective, Canucks Army has identified the team's most pressing need - a number 3 defenceman.
"Put a quality 3D behind Hughes and Hronek on the depth chart, and it doesn't really matter who fills out the fourth spot in the top-four. Find someone to fill that considerable gap in effectiveness between Hughes/Hronek and Soucy/Myers, and we're suddenly looking at a much stronger contender." Stephan Roget of Canucks Army said.
He added, "Put that notion together with the aforementioned window of the next three seasons, and the urgency becomes pretty clear. Canucks management's number one job right now is to seek out and acquire a genuine 3Dand soon. Preferably, between now and the 2025 offseason."
Roget took a look at some potential options for the Vancouver Canucks if they opt to wait until free agency next summer and go with Carson Soucy & Tyler Myers as their second pair for this year. Those options include former first-overall pick Aaron Ekblad, Shea Theodore and Jake McCabe.
For now, it looks like the Canucks will stay the course with their defensive group, but if they get off to a hot start to the new season, then Patrik Allvin could be aggressive on the trade market looking for an upgrade on their second pairing before the deadline in March.
