Dan McCourt's NHL Officiating Career
According to the National Hockey League's Officials Association, McCourt first took to the ice as a linesman in 1979, with his on-ice career coming to a close 25 years later in 2004.
Aside from his on-ice work as a linesman, McCourt also spent time in the scouting and development departments with the Officials Association.
"The NHL mourns the passing of linesman Danny McCourt, who officiated over 1,600 NHL games and served almost two decades in scouting and development with the League's officiating department. Our thoughts are with his wife Betty, family, friends and the many colleagues he worked alongside throughout his career." the NHL said.
Over the last 12 seasons, McCourt has been the senior supervisor of officials for the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) and on Tuesday, the league released a statement on his passing.
"The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League is mourning the loss of longtime Greater Sudbury product, Dan McCourt, who passed away Monday following an extended illness.
All the while, McCourt was instrumental in the continued development of the NOJHL officiating program over the past 12 seasons.
From the supervision of game officials, to providing guidance during the course of their assignments, he presented abounding direction in their progress over the course of each campaign.
That valuable insight to the league referees and those working the lines, earned the respect of all those he was associated with.
He was also a key member of the NOJHL officials' supervisory staff.
From working alongside commissioner Robert Mazzuca as a special assistant and with the other league supervisors in the day-to-day role of the betterment of the league and its on-ice officials, he aided in their development, including advancing to the next level."
McCourt comes from a very athletic family with his brother Dale spending seven seasons in the National Hockey League with Detroit, Buffalo and Toronto, while his uncle, the legendary George Armstrong won four Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
The thoughts of everyone at Canucks Daily are with the family and friends of Danny McCourt.
