Rutherford makes a statement in regards to the Horvat negotiations that won't age well
Jim Rutherford had a heck of a performance in the press conference he gave this afternoon and he made a shocking statement regarding the current team captain.
It's well known that the Canucks' captain
Bo Horvat is currently having a career-high and he's on pace to break every record he'd previously set for himself. Horvat is currently playing on the last year of the contract he signed in 2017 with a $5.5M cap hit, and when asked about it, Rutherford made quite the statement.
"Jim Rutherford says he believes #canucks have taken their best shot at signing Bo Horvat, but acknowledges it's probably not market value to the standard he's set during a career-best season.
"We're in a pickle here."
At the end of the day, it's what a negotiation is. Both sides are trying to get the best deal for themselves, it just seems that the difference between the two clans is too big. Canucks are trying to retain the captain's services for something in the mid 6s while the Horvat clan is definitely aiming for the Miller money, if not more.
Though a fan made a question that needs an honest answer from the Canucks management group:
"If you're not willing to pay Bo based on career year value, why did they pay JT based on a career year?"
Is this not a fair question?
J.T. Miller has been a truly important piece to the Canucks' offense since he arrived in Vancouver, but he exploded last year with 99 points in 80 games, just before he inked his new deal he had a career year.
Bo Horvat improved his offensive game in a constant manner since he made his first steps in the NHL and is currently on pace for career highs in both goals and points. Is he now playing to the full extent of his abilities? Or did Miller getting a contract first actually motivated him to the next level?
Nevertheless, why should they pay Miller based on a career year, but disagree to do the same with the team captain?
