Most known for coaching the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cups in the 1980s, Sather discussed Alex Ovechkin's chase for the all time goals scored record currently held by the star of those Oilers, Wayne Gretzky.
Sather said he doesn't want to see Ovi break the record, but his reasoning stunned the live audience in the building.
A clearly unexpected turn the audience did not foresee based on the reaction, although it did illicit a few cheers.
Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas, the hosts of 32 Thoughts, both seemed rather stunned by the out of left field remark as well, and some think they should have put up some fight to the comment.
Sather, 81, comes from a different era where there was a lot of hatred between Russian and North American Players, and clearly he hasn't shaken that.
While Glen Sather might not want to see it, it looks more and more like Alex Ovechkin will in fact break the NHL goals record that once looked unbreakable, and could even do it this season.
The 39 year old missed some games earlier this season, a rarity in his long career, but has been one of the most prolific scorers in the league when healthy with 21 goals in 29 games.
With Washington having 37 games left in the season and being a surprise top team this year, Ovechkin is currently on pace to beat the record this season even having missed time (he needs 21 more goals).
The Canucks will welcome Ovi and the Caps on January 25, and will hope to slow down his pursuit of the record.
