The two superstars will hit free agency with full autonomy during the 2023-2024 season.
Every fan in Toronto sure hopes that Brad Treliving finds a way to have both signed to an extension before the team's training camp, but it seems that Treliving has other ideas in mind.
Eklund, from Hockey Buzz, once again reported a bombshell in the NHL earlier today when he stated that the Maple Leafs and the Islanders were trying to work a blockbuster to send William Nylander to Long Island.
It's not a secret, the Islanders are looking to add more offensive power; even after they had acquired the Canucks' captain Bo Horvat, the New York-based team had issues finding the back of the net.
The reporter added that the Islanders could notably send, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, a bonafide third-line centerman, and Oliver Whalstrom, a former 1st Rounder (RFA at the end of the season).
Of course, to move a player that just registered 40 goals and 87 points.
The Leafs are caught in a shamble here and don't have enough cap space to sign Nylander and Matthews to whatever amount of money they want, and Auston Matthews holds a complete no-movement clause preventing him from being traded.
That being said, Nylander is definitely the one that could move. The Leafs are going to have a hard time figuring that one out and they obviously can't lost them both freely to free agency.
