In a social media post on Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they've agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $800,000 with Tyler Motte, making them the third Original Six team he's played for following the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers.
The 29-year-old was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round in 2013, before being moved to Columbus Blue Jackets four years later.
In 2018, the Blue Jackets traded Motte, along with Jussi Jokinen to the Vancouver Canucks in a deal that saw Thomas Vanek go to Columbus. Motte ended up spending parts of five seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, putting up 50 points (28 goals, 22 assists), 60 penalty minutes and was a minus-20 in 196 games.
Motte, a native of St. Clair, Michigan, appeared in 69 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2023-24 season where he recorded nine points (six goals, three assists), 28 penalty minutes and was a minus-eight. He went on to add one goal and two penalty minutes in five games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It'll be interesting to see what role Motte is given to start the 2024-25 season in October, but it's more than likely he'll be on the fourth line and might see some time on the second penalty killing unit.
