The London Ontario Native has played on 7 total NHL teams. Since 2013-14, when Gagner was traded to the lighting and subsequently moved again in the same day to the Coyotes, Gagner moved teams an astounding 8 times up until last season.
Gagner's most successful part of his career was in Edmonton from 2007-08 until 2013-14 where he would register 111 goals and 206 assists. Along with his pretty solid point total, Gagner also showed his skill off in the shootout, scoring 20 goals in 57 attempts, which is about 31% of his shots.
Gagner bounced around from team to team after Edmonton as he tried to find a place to call home. In 2019-20, Gagner landed in Detroit where played 6 games and then stayed there for 2 more seasons. It was clear that while Gagner was still an effective player, but that he had lost a step only recording 47 points in 129 games.
Last season, Gagner played on the Jets for 48 games where he recorded 14 points, before he needed season-ending hip surgery.
Unfortunately, Gagner will likely be done because of this hip surgery. He hasn't been cleared to play and will only participate in practices at camp. The Oilers will give Gagner a PTO with the Bakerfield Condors, should he be cleared to play, according to an article by Jim Matheson.
Sam Gagner has had a terrific NHL career. The Center had many incredible moments in his career, including a 9 point night. He will be remembered by many NHL fans!
