The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday afternoon that New York Islanders forward and British Columbia native Mat Barzal has been fined $5,000 for a high-stick on Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Tony DeAngelo.

"NY Islanders' Mathew Barzal has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for High-sticking Carolina's Tony DeAngelo."

The incident occurred early on in the second period of Saturday night's game between the Islanders and Hurricanes. As Barzal and DeAngelo go into the corner to battle for the puck, the Islanders forward's stick comes swinging around and clips DeAngelo in the side of his head.

Barzal was given a two-minute minor for high-sticking on the play, while DeAngelo appeared to be shaken up, but was good enough to remain in the game.

All of Barzal's $5,000 fine will go to the NHL Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
