LATEST | Insider gives big update on Elias Pettersson's contract talks
The Vancouver Canucks and forward Elias Pettersson have put contract talks on the back burner in order to focus on the current season, but eventually, both sides will need to sit down and hammer out a new deal.
Pettersson is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st and according to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Swedish forward and the Canucks will start talking about an extension again at some point in January or February.
Dreger went on to say that there's still no rush from Pettersson and his camp, however the Canucks are eager and ready to get it done.
"No official timeline, but I think we're looking at something similar where we're looking at January, perhaps into February, but the no-rush approach for Pettersson very much remains valid. He wanted to take his time to get a feel for the Vancouver Canucks and where they're at. Well, the team is doing well, and Pettersson himself is doing great, so I could expect CAA Hockey, who represents Pettersson, to walk him through the multiple scenarios and the financial options that he is going to have relatively early in the new year. If he feels good at that point, then you launch into the negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks. No timeline, but the Canucks are eager, and they're ready." Dreger said.
Pettersson, 25, has had a very strong season so far, which will help him get a higher dollar value on his next contract than some would have initially expected.
In 34 games, Pettersson has 41 points (13 goals, 28 assists), two penalty minutes and is a plus-11.
