The Penguins and the Sharks struck blockbuster deal over the weekend. To make that dream a reality, the Pens GM got extremely creative and used the Montreal Canadiens as a 3rd party-broker.

In this massive deal, the Canadiens were able to dump Mike Hoffman and his $4.5M cap hit to the Sharks and took the veteran defenceman Jeff Petry with a 25% discount, Casey DeSmith, a prospect (Nathan Legare) and a 2nd Round Draft Selection.

In the trade review, Matt Sekeres absolutely scorched Patrik Allvin for not jumping on the opportunity:

'@mattsekeres
on the #Canucks not being 3rd-party trade brokers like the #GoHabsGo were in the Karlsson deal:

"Another reminder that some GMs are playing chess, while the Canucks have too often played checkers."

He may have a point, the Canucks have been looking for an opportunity to get rid of Tyler Myers. Had they participated in this trade, they could have sent Myers to San Jose and acquired Jeff Petry who would've been a great flipping asset.

Allvin has been extremely active on free agency and more often than not, came up on top in his trades. Currently in a tough spot cap wise, Allvin will need to be creative if he intends on moving contracts around and that's an opportunity he could've used.
