The NHL has seen some pretty big trades as of late, teams and general managers are at that point of the season where they are desperately trying to improve their roster in order to secure or push for a playoff spot.
One team that has been desperate to improve both their forwards and top-4 defensive pairings are the Vancouver Canucks, but unfortunately for them and for fans, there has been little to no action on the trade market to make the team better.
The issues surrounding J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson have caused a lot of speculation that a trade may be in order for one of the two stars, and a recent interview with general manager Patrik Allvin says it is still not off the table..
But, a new report indicated that a trade almost took place earlier this year, which would have avoided many of the issues that surround the team.
Per Marco Normandin, the Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks started negotiating a trade involving Elias Pettersson and Martin Necas, who both at the time were unsigned.
This offer in the end was ultimately scrapped by Patrik Allvin and the Canucks, but it makes you think what could have been.
The 25-year-old Martin Necas has outperformed Pettersson by a large margin this season, scoring 44 points in 36 games, not to mention he earns $6.5M per season.
The 26-year-old Elias Pettersson has not played bad, but is certainly not living up to his contract, scoring 28 points in 34 games this season while earning $11.6M per season.
