After all the trade rumors, drama and speculation that have surrounded the Vancouver Canucks this season, a blockbuster trade that involved Elias Pettersson was denied earlier this season, and all of these narratives could have been avoided.
The NHL has seen some pretty big trades as of late, teams and general managers are at that point of the season where they are desperately trying to improve their roster in order to secure or push for a playoff spot.
One team that has been desperate to improve both their forwards and top-4 defensive pairings are the Vancouver Canucks, but unfortunately for them and for fans, there has been little to no action on the trade market to make the team better.
Elias Pettersson Trade was Denied Earlier in the Year
But, a new report indicated that a trade almost took place earlier this year, which would have avoided many of the issues that surround the team.
The proposed trade was as follows:
To Carolina: Elias Pettersson
To Vancouver: Martin Necas,
Brett Pesce, draft pick
This offer in the end was ultimately scrapped by Patrik Allvin and the Canucks, but it makes you think what could have been.
The 25-year-old Martin Necas has outperformed Pettersson by a large margin this season, scoring 44 points in 36 games, not to mention
he earns $6.5M per season.
The 26-year-old Elias Pettersson has not played bad, but is certainly not living up to his contract, scoring 28 points in 34 games this season while
earning $11.6M per season.
