Alex Edler comments on retiring as a member of the Vancouver Canucks
Veteran defenceman Alex Edler has commented on being able to retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.
On Tuesday night, the Vancouver Canucks announced that they'll be signing former defenceman Alex Edler to a one-day contract next month to retire as a member of the organization. Edler will also be honoured by the Canucks ahead of their game on Friday, October 11th against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Edler, who spent 15 seasons as a Vancouver Canuck, commented on the news saying that he's 'humbled and honoured' to be given the opportunity to retire with the team he spent the majority of his career with.
"I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks," said Edler. "I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family."
The Ostersund, Sweden native was selected 93rd overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. After spending the 2004-05 season in Sweden and the following campaign with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL, Elder made the jump to professional hockey ahead of the 2006-07 season.
During his 15 years with the Vancouver Canucks, Edler had 409 points (99 goals, 310 assists), 665 penalty minutes and was a minus-36. In 2011, Edler played a key role on the Canucks' blueline, helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final, where they eventually fell to the Boston Bruins.
The 38-year-old is one of the best defencemen in Vancouver Canucks history and is the current all-time franchise leader in multiple categories among blueliners including games played, goals, assists and points.
We'll have to wait to see what the Vancouver Canucks have in store for October 11th and if Alex Edler will join the team's Ring of Honour.
