Vancouver Canucks Made a Big Mistake Letting This Former Top Prospect Sign with the Minnesota Wild
A former Vancouver Canucks prospect has signed his first contract in professional hockey after leaving college at the end of the 2024-25 season.
With the 2024-25 NCAA hockey season coming to a close over the weekend, we've seen a number of prospects sign entry-level contracts in the National Hockey League.
Former Vancouver Canucks prospect signs first professional contract
Yesterday afternoon, the American Hockey League's
Grand Rapids Griffins announced that they've agreed to terms on a two-year contract beginning next season with Jacob Truscott.
"The Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday signed former University of Michigan defenseman Jacob Truscott to a two-year AHL contract that will begin in the 2025-26 season." the Griffins said.
The Fort Gratiot, Michigan native spent five seasons in the NCAA with the University of Michigan and was even their captain for the 2023-24 season, leading his school to the Frozen Four where they'd go on to lose to Boston College in the semi-finals.
In 166 games with the University of Michigan, Truscott registered 70 points (12 goals, 58 assists), 119 penalty minutes and was a plus-44.
Given the depth the Vancouver Canucks have on the blueline in their prospect pool and in Abbotsford, it made sense why Patrik Allvin decided not to sign Jacob Truscott before his rights expired on August 15th, 2024.
Truscott will now have an opportunity to show what he's capable of at the professional level, while also remaining in his home state of Michigan playing for the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
If Truscott puts in the effort needed to be a professional hockey player, which won't be an issue for him whatsoever, it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if he were to land a contract with a National Hockey League club in the years to come.
