Vancouver Canucks' Elias Pettersson Holds Nothing Back When Finally Addressing Imminent Trade Rumors
Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson sat down with Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre to address his less than stellar play this season, and also finally commented on the trade rumors that swirl amid his drama with teammate J.T. Miller.
Pettersson fully understands that after signing his monster contract, the expectations for him and his play are under the microscope of fans and the media, and he knows that he has not been his best this season.
Elias Pettersson finally comments on his performance this season and trade rumors
Recently, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin called out Elias Pettersson in the media, saying he has faith in him, but also scrutinized his play, even confirming a trade was not off the table.
"I haven't had the start (to the season) that I wanted to," Pettersson told Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre. "At the end of the day, I have expectations from the club, and, obviously, I haven't met them yet. But, I mean, it doesn't matter what people say. I know what I can do, and that's what I'm focusing on doing."
Pettersson continued, adding that he knows he can play better, and no one has higher expectations than himself.
"I know I can do better," Pettersson said. "I will be the first one to say it, and I never think things will get easier."
For a player that signed an 8-year, $92.8 million contract and carrying a cap hit of $11.6 million per season, Pettersson should be dominating games.
But after 34 games this season, Pettersson has just 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points.
Now, he is sidelined with an undisclosed injury that may affect his game even more when he returns.
Amid his on ice issues and all of the drama with his teammate J.T. Miller, he is well aware of all the trade rumors and speculation, and claims it is not affecting him.
"But then it's like, can I control it? No," Pettersson said. "So that's where I'm at. I'm trying not to think about it. But I'm sure it will go away if I play better and if we win."
He made it clear he wants to remain a Vancouver Canuck.
"That's why I signed here," he said. "Of course."
At the end of the day, Elias Pettersson remains focused on tying to find his game in order to live up the his contract.
Despite the swirling trade rumors that cloud over him and the team, he remains committed to the organization, and believes that winning and better play will shut down all issues that cause distractions.
