With Thatcher Demko sidelined through training camp and pre-season games, along with his status for opening night up in the air, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin is scouring the market for a veteran to play with Arturs Silovs.
While there's plenty of names to consider on the free agent market, Tyson Cole of Canucks Army took a look at some options for Vancouver on the trade market, more specifically that they can get with the fourth-round pick they acquired from Edmonton in the Vasily Podkolzin deal.
Among the names mentioned by Cole were Pheonix Copley of the Los Angeles Kings, Alex Lyon of the Detroit Red Wings and James Reimer of the Buffalo Sabres, all of whom are on teams with a crowded crease, meaning there likely isn't playing time for them.
Cole also mentioned a pair of Winnipeg Jets netminders, Eric Comrie and Kaapo Kahkonen, both of whom will be competing for the backup role behind Connor Hellebuyck in training camp.
32-year-old Pheonix Copley would be a solid addition for the Vancouver Canucks, especially given his numbers in the NHL and AHL over the last two seasons. Two years ago, Copley played 37 games for the Kings and was lights out. He had a record of 24-6-3 along with a 2.64 goals against average, a .903 save percentage and one shutout.
During the 2023-24 season, Copley split time between the NHL and the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. In eight NHL games, he was 4-1-2 with one shutout. The North Pole, Alaska native was re-signed by the Kings back in July to a one-year deal with a cap hit of $825,000 USD.
