Former Canuck Frank Corrado shares his biggest concern over goaltender Thatcher Demko
Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Frank Corrado has shared his concern over goaltender Thatcher Demko, who won't be ready for training camp.
The Vancouver Canucks are set to enter training camp without their star goaltender, Thatcher Demko, who is still not 100 percent healthy after dealing with back-to-back knee injuries. It's unclear if Demko will be ready for opening night in October, but if he's not, the tandem to start the season will likely be Arturs Silovs and Jiri Patera unless Patrik Allvin signs a veteran netminder on the free-agent market.
While on Sekeres & Price, Former Canucks defenceman Frank Corrado shared his concern regarding Thatcher Demko's status heading into the season. Corrado said that it has to be something pretty significant for him to be missing the start of training camp, and it's likely concerning for the Canucks at this point.
"You never want to miss training camp, and when it comes to having an injury, you know, leading up to the season, something that's nagging you going into the season, it feels like you're always chasing it, and that's not something I want for my starting goaltender." Corrado said.
He added, "So there has to be a fairly significant level of concern. Also, given that he couldn't finish in the playoffs and now he's had all summer to rest, rehabilitate, and strengthen, I can guarantee that he would have been addressing things from Day 1 as soon as his off-season started. So you go through all this time, and it's still not ready like that has to be fairly significant and fairly concerning. I'm not privy to, you know, the nature of it, but just as someone who's been through the whole injury process, like a million times and always had to rehab things in the summer, it's generally not great news when you're not ready for the start of training camp."
While Arturs Silovs is more than capable of taking on the starting role to start the season, as he proved in the playoffs, it would be an intelligent move for Patrik Allvin and the Canucks to go out and sign, or trade for, a veteran to share the crease with the young Latvian goaltender.
The Canucks are set to open their training camp in nearly three weeks, and it's going to be interesting to see what the plan is going forward between the pipes due to Demko's status.
