One of the world's top junior leagues got underway on Friday as the puck dropped on the 2024-25 J20 Nationell season, with Vancouver Canucks prospect Melvin Fernstrom in action.
Fernstrom, who was selected in the third round by Vancouver back in late June, is looking to pick up where he left off in J20 Nationell last season after he registered 63 points in 45 games. It didn't take him long to do so.
In Orebro HK J20's season opener on Friday against Vaxjo, Fernstrom picked up a goal and an assist as his club took a 2-1 win to start the new campaign.
Orebro HK J20 and Vaxjo were back in action again early on Saturday and Melvin Fernstrom stole the spotlight for a second consecutive day.
While on the powerplay in overtime, Fernstrom, who near the bottom of the circle waiting for the puck, fired home a one-timer past the Vaxjo goaltender to give Orebro HK J20 a 2-1 overtime win and two wins to start the new season.
If Fernstrom is able to continue playing this week in the next couple of weeks, he could find himself a spot on Orebro HK's roster in the Swedish Hockey League and that would be big for the 18-year-old's development. While dominating a U20 league as an 18-year-old isn't a bad thing, the Canucks would probably like to see him playing against men, whether that be with Orebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League or a loan to a team in the second division, Hockey Allsvenskan.
Fernstrom and Orebro HK J20 will be back in action on Sunday at 6:30 am ET/3:30 am PT as they take on Malmo Redhawks J20. Fernstrom will look to make it three goals in three games and prove to the Orebro HK organization that he's ready to play professionally full-time.
