Canucks Reporter Believes Team Made Big Mistake Placing Erik Brannstrom on Waivers
A Vancouver Canucks reporter believes that the team has made a pretty big mistake by placing Swedish defenseman Erik Brannstrom on waivers.
Yesterday, Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks made a surprising roster move, placing former first-round pick Erik Brannstrom on waivers.
"General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that D Erik Brannstrom has been placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Abbotsford (AHL)." the team announced. The move to place Erik Brannstrom on waivers follows two straight weeks of him sitting in the press box, which isn't going to help a 25-year-old blueliner in any way and hopefully, he clears on Monday, which will allow him to get game action down in Abbotsford.

In a recent article on The Canuck Way, Jonathan Bailey believes that the team has made a mistake by placing Erik Brannstrom on waivers, especially when considering that Vancouver has been struggling on the blueline over the last little while, with the exception of Quinn Hughes.
"The Vancouver Canucks placed defenceman Erik Brannstrom on waivers Sunday, signaling the end of his time with the club at the NHL level for the foreseeable future. But with the Canucks' continued struggles at the position, excluding the guy wearing No. 43, it is hard to feel that this move was anything but a short-sighted mistake." Bailey said.
Bailey noted some advanced metrics that point to why this move could end up being a mistake by Patrik Allvin and the management staff.
Erik Brannstrom is third on the Canucks for high-danger shots per 60 minutes with 2.3, fourth among defenseman on the team in on-ice expected goals per 60 minutes at 2.17.
On the defensive side of things, Brannstrom sits sixth among Canucks blueliners with 2.28 on-ice expected goals against per 60 minutes at 5-on-5.
We'll have to wait until 11 am PT to see whether or not this decision comes back to hurt the Vancouver Canucks or if they'll be able to assign the Eksjo native to the American Hockey League.
