The Columbus Blue Jackets have reportedly turned away the Vancouver Canucks' attempt to trade for young defenseman David Jiricek for not having any enough pieces to offer.

As the Vancouver Canucks still search for a defenseman to upgrade their second pairing, the urgency level has increased drastically as the team announced that Filip Hronek and partner of Quinn Hughes will be out long term with an upper body injury.

The name that has been thrown out the most recently is that of 21-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets prospect David Jiricek.

Reports have confirmed that teams have been calling non-stop about the youngster, and the Canucks were one of them.

Just a few days, ago it was confirmed that Vancouver was out of the running for Jiricek, but it has just been revealed why that is.

Why the Vancouver Canucks' attempts to trade for David Jiricek were shut down by the Columbus Blue Jackets

"It seems like a David Jiricek move is a relative imminent transaction... Something that could be processed tonight... Can tell you it's not the Canucks." Seravalli said on Monday.

With the Blue Jackets eager to move the former 6th-pick, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for the Vancouver Canucks.

Unfortunately, a new report by Rick Dhaliwal confirms that the Canucks do not hold any prospects or assets the Blue Jackets are interested in for Jiricek.

«The Canucks were interested. They talked to Columbus, but Columbus told a bunch of teams - including Vancouver - that they didn't have the assets for Jiricek. Canucks didn't have the prospects, and they didn't want to give up what Columbus wanted. You know Columbus wanted Tom Willander in return because he's a right-shot defenceman.

The main name that would have made sense would to trade stud NCAA d-man Tom Willander.

But, the Canucks are still very high on the potential of Willander, which could mean his name was off the table in negotiations.

It is unclear who is a better prospect, and there are mixed views on the pairs comparisons.

But the Canucks seem to not want to gamble with the future they see in Willander.

Willander is currently in his 2nd year playing for Boston University in the NCAA. In his freshman year, he appeared in 38 games, recording 4 goals and 21 assists for 25 points.
