While appearing on a podcast recently, the wife of former Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson revealed a wild story of how he found out about his trade to Vancouver.

Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson has had a tough 2024-25 season after needing shoulder surgery back in October, but returned to the lineup recently and hopes to play a big role in helping the Columbus Blue Jackets get to the postseason.
It's been nearly nine years since Gudbranson was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks by the Florida Panthers and recently, his wife, Sarah, opened up about how they were informed of the move.

Erik Gudbranson's wife shares wild story about trade to Vancouver

On May 25th, 2016, the same day as Game 7 of the Western Conference Final, the Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers completed a big trade involving Erik Gudbranson, with Jared McCann and draft picks heading to the Sunshine State.
Because the Panthers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs at that point, Gudbranson and his one of his teammates were on a trip in Africa and he ended up being one of the final people to know about his own trade.
While making an appearance on the Never Offside podcast, Sarah Gudbranson shared that her husband's agent called her to inform her of the move, just minutes after she found out on social media.
She then revealed that Erik was on a riverboat cruise with no Wi-Fi at the time of the move and couldn't be reached to be told about the trade until 12 hours later.
"Our craziest one was when he got traded from Florida to Vancouver because I think at that point, neither of us saw it coming. He was in Africa with one of his teammates on a trip and I was in Florida at our apartment in dental school, so I got home from night clinic, made my dinner, sat on the couch and just started like scrolling through Instagram and I saw that he got traded. Two seconds later, his agent calls me and he explains everything." Sarah Gudbranson said.

She added, "Erik found out 12 hours later because he was on a riverboat cruise with no Wi-Fi. So everybody knew he'd been traded and he had no clue. That's like the most caught off-guard we've ever been."
The Ottawa native would go on to spend parts of three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, registering 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in 139 games, before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2019 for Tanner Pearson.
