Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood is on the verge of breaking a franchise record tonight as the team hosts Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

The Vancouver Canucks are back at Rogers Arena tonight as the team takes on Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, who currently lead the Eastern Conference and NHL standings with a record of 33-10-5 (71 points) through 48 games.

While the team might be struggling in their last ten, winning just two games, it could be a special night for forward Kiefer Sherwood as he's set to break a franchise record against the Capitals, depending on if he's able to suit up after leaving Thursday's game for undisclosed reasons.

Kiefer Sherwood set to become Vancouver Canucks' single-season hits record holder

During Thursday night's loss to the Edmonton Oilers, Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood recorded three hits to bring his season total up to 273, which is 93 more than Philadelphia's Garnet Hathaway, who's in second place.

Sherwood's 273 hits also ties him with defenseman Luke Schenn for the most in a single season in Vancouver Canucks franchise history and with 35 games still remaining, there's no doubt he'll also smash the NHL record, which is currently held by Jeremy Lauzon who had 383 last year.

With one hit tonight, if he's able to play, Kiefer Sherwood will set the Vancouver Canucks' single season record and he's become one of the Canucks' best signings from last summer after inking a two-year deal at $1.5 million AAV.

Along with his 273 hits on the season entering action on Saturday, the Columbus, Ohio native has registered 21 points (13 goals, eight assists), 22 penalty minutes and is a minus-one in 47 games.

We'll have to wait and see later today once head coach Rick Tocchet meets with the media, if Kiefer Sherwood will be good to go tonight or if he'll need to insert Nils Hoglander into the lineup.

If Sherwood can't go tonight, Vancouver Canucks fans won't have to wait too long to see him break that franchise record as they'll be back in action on Monday in St. Louis.

Puck drop for tonight's game against the Washington Capitals is set for 7 pm PT on CBC and Sportsnet.
