Frank Seravalli said earlier this week that Elias Pettersson, who is set to become a restricted free agent in July, has made significant progress on a contract extension with the Canucks that is expected to be for eight-years.
When the Canucks and Pettersson were in a stalemate however, the team engaged in trade talks and it was reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman that they discussed a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Both options remain on the table however, as both re-signing Pettersson and trading him are possibilities. On Friday, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet shared that a contract in the range of $90 to $96 million has been offered to Pettersson.
Meanwhile, on the 32 Thoughts podcast on Friday, Elliotte Friedman revealed that it was Jim Rutherford who approached Pettersson and his camp about a trade and that it was an option they were seriously considering.
Given how important Elias Pettersson is to the Vancouver Canucks organization, it's crazy to see how this situation has developed and that a trade is even an option at this point. It's understandable that going into the season, Pettersson wanted to wait before signing an extension so he could focus on his play, but both sides need to come to the table and get a deal done soon.
