According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Vancouver Canucks are making a strong push for a centre instead of a defenseman, and they may have found him on the New York Islanders.

"I think if the Canucks do make a trade, they're gonna need a centre in return,» Friedman reported.

«I know Canucks fans are concerned about the defence with [Quinn] Hughes and [Filip] Hronek injured, but I believe the team has prioritized centre in return more than the blueline because they'd be trading a centre if one or both was to go."

Vancouver Canucks Making Push for New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson

Amid the news about the Canucks looking to acquire a centre over a d-man, trusted NHL sources report that the Vancouver Canucks have extreme interest in going after New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson.

The belief is that the trade would involve Canucks star Elias Pettersson heading over to the Islanders for pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) Brock Nelson and defenseman Noah Dobson.

The main issue surrounding the trade is the contract situation of Nelson.

If the Canucks are to part ways with Pettersson, they are not interested in acquiring just a rental piece that threatens to test free agency come the offseason.

The likely scenario would have to be a sign and trade, or a commitment from Nelson that he will sign an extension with Canucks amid a trade is finalized.

Nelson as 10 goals and 11 assist for 21 points in 40 games this season.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but hopefully the issues that surround Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller and the Vancouver Canucks get resolved so they can compete for a Stanley Cup with out having to make any crazy trades.
