Today was the final day for players to be placed on unconditional waivers and have their contract bought out and today's waiver wire featured a former Vancouver Canucks defenceman.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Winnipeg Jets have decided to place defenceman Nate Schmidt on unconditional waivers to buyout the final year of his contract. The move will be completed tomorrow at 12 pm ET if Schmidt is not claimed by any other team.
Seravalli added that the buyout will last two seasons and the Jets will have a cap hit of $2.7 million in the first year and $1.6 million in the second year.
"#nhljets have also placed D Nate Schmidt on unconditional waivers today for purposes of a buyout." Seravalli said.

He added, "If unclaimed, Schmidt buyout would result in a $2.7 million cap charge next season and a $1.6 million charge in 2025-26, according to @CapFriendly."

Schmidt, 32, spent one season with the Canucks in 2020-21 before moving on to Winnipeg as a free agent. In 63 games this season, the St. Cloud, Minnesota native had 14 points (two goals, 12 assists), 16 penalty minutes and was a minus-ten. He went on to add one goal in three playoff games.
