The cards compare their previous point production, percentile rank, and expected production creating a whole system. Not only does that help determine whether the player is playing up to the salary he's commanding, but it also gives you a good idea of the salary this player could ask for when comes time to negotiate a new deal. At this point in the season, here are the players that are performing well over their cost:
1. Andrei Kuzmenko
The latest Russian addition has been on fire since his arrival with the Team. Since he commands an extremely low $1.0M it's no surprise that he's the top player on the list. The 26-year-old is on pace for 32 goals and 66 points and his upside all over the ice puts him at a market value of $9.4M, therefore, adding up to an $8.4M upside.
2. Elias Pettersson
Currently on a $7.4M / year salary, Pettersson is on pace for 37 goals and 88 points. It puts him in the 98th league percentile for offensive production. His current market value is $12.7M, which gives him an incredible $5.3M in plus value.
3. Bo Horvat
On the last year of a $5.5M / year deal, it's no surprise that Horvat sits atop of the list. 100th percentile for goal scoring, on pace for 48 on the year. His market value is $8.8M, which may give you an idea of what he will aim for if he hits free agency. Plus value, therefore, stands at $3.3M.
These are occupying the top spots as of right now, not so far behind, J.T. Miller with a current +$3.2M based on his current deal, and Ilya Mikhevev +$2.8M. It's fair to say that most forwards from the Canucks' group are getting it done.
On the other hand, some skaters are clearly playing on the wrong side of things, here's where the Canucks need to shake it up.
1. Tyler Myers
The tall defenseman is currently costing the team a lot as he shows a negative value on the market. It's no secret that he's never played up to his salary since he signed with the Nucks, though one would at least expect some positive to come out of a $6.0M guy. He tops the negative list at -$6.1M.
2. Brock Boeser
The right-winger hasn't been himself since his injury, he's currently on pace for 53 points and 19 goals, his lowest in the last three years. It's been announced all around the league that the Nucks were trying to move him. Though with him underperforming the way he is, can they pull it off? He's currently at a market value of $1.2M, meaning -$5.3M.
3. Oliver Ekman-Larsson
When OEL was acquired from the Coyotes, they retained just under $1M in salary and it definitely should've been more. OEL had shown top-end defender abilities back in Arizona. Since he move to Canada, he has failed to live up to his promising career start. His AAV stands at $7.3M and his market value at $2.6M, giving us a downside worth -$4.7M.
Myers, Boeser, and OEL will definitely need to come up big and start playing up to their salaries because right now, it just might be what's causing the team's struggles.
