Jakub Vrana, the St. Louis Blues winger, is thriving just two weeks after being traded by Detroit Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman.

During a recent morning skate, Vrana collided with a teammate and suffered an injury just under his nose from a skate blade.

''He needed to get some work done,» Blues coach Craig Berube said, «It's a pretty bad cut. He'll come ready to play and see what happens. It was kind of unfortunate. I don't know if I've ever seen that morning skate before. Kind of a freak thing."

''They were battling on the walls. I didn't really see what happened. I was kind of watching but not real close. Next thing you know there's blood everywhere. A skate came up and got him.''

Despite getting 25 stitches in his face and wearing a full face mask, Vrana played an excellent game against the Minnesota Wild, scoring two goals. In the first period, Vrana skated past several Wild defenders to score his first goal, and just three minutes and 43 seconds later, he scored again with a huge slap shot.

Since being traded for a seventh-round pick and Dylan McLaughlin, Vrana has scored four goals in five games with the Blues. After two tumultuous years with Detroit, Vrana appears to have found a new home in St. Louis.
