The scandal regarding the 2018 Team Canada World Junior team has taken a wild turn when the London Police Dept. asked the five players involved to turn themselves in.
The five players have all taken leave of absence from their team and Gary Bettman first commented on the situation at the All-Star Game Press conference that was held just moments ago. He first enlightened the situation as to whether or not they'd be returning to the ice during the investigation:
Bettman on the five players, says he would be surprised if they were playing in the NHL while the judicial process is playing out.
The NHL will prudently wait to see the end results of the investigation before taking any action regarding the players' future:
Will post full clip, but Bettman says NHL will wait until judicial process is complete before taking any action. Notes that the five players facing charges are all on leave from their teams
Bettman was also asked whether or not the team's would be given a special right to terminate their players' contract and given the ''coincidental'' fact that they're all free agents at the end of the season:
Bettman on if teams will be able to terminate the contract of a player being charged: «Timing is irrelevant, they'll be without a contract after this season. In order to terminate a contract successfully, you need to prove certain things.»
Bettman on suspending charged players without pay: «I don't think that's necessary the fact that they're away from their teams and not playing, I'm comfortable with they've been paid the bulk of their salary for the year anyway.»
«Concern is to get this right.»
The London Police Dept will be holding an official press conference regarding the events on Monday. Some clarity will surely come out of it then.
