Brawls have become rare in the last few years. Not too long ago, in the 90s, it seemed as if fist fights were happening as much as goals in a game, and nowadays the "tough guys" don't even fight more than 10 times a year.

Hockey is an intense and emotional game, and it's easy to let testosterone take over. As reported by the Global News, an exciting minor hockey game occurred on Sunday, but we'll mainly remember this one because of the way it ended:

"Instead of giving handshakes, players threw punches. Edmonton hockey officials say they're dismayed by the violence and hope this will be a wake-up call for the hockey community."

The rivalry between South East Edmonton Recreation Association team SE701 and Stony Plain Minor Hockey Predators team SN701 led to an uneventful occurrence after a U18 Tier 1 playoff game between the two. The handshake erupted in a brawl, leading to a pile-up where both the coaches and referees had to jump in to stop. See the sequence for yourself:

The Edmonton Federation Hockey League president, John Putters commented on the incident:

"The game was very competitive. It was a great game. And they ended up in an overtime victory for one of the teams, , To have that incident happen in a handshake was extremely disappointing. And the fact that it ended up on social media was even more disappointing."

Obviously, the sequence is making rounds on the internet as we speak. At this point, three match penalties, nine fighting majors, 15 games game misconducts, a total of 8 players were suspended and some indefinitely. Both coaches were also suspended from their duties.

It's not the first time this year that we've reported events of this sort, whether it's junior or U18 or even U16, the play should not be leading to brawls like this one.
