Former Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau calls out a youngster for his poor attitude
Rutger McGroarty's situation in Winnipeg has been a hot topic all offseason, and now a former NHL head coach has weighed in with some strong opinions.
After months of speculation, McGroarty's time with the Winnipeg Jets has come to an end, with the Pittsburgh Penguins acquiring him in exchange for 2023 first-round pick Brayden Yager. The Jets finally moved on from what had become a significant offseason headache.
Many are upset with how McGroarty handled the situation, particularly given that he has yet to make his NHL debut. The idea that a young player would make demands of his franchise has rubbed many the wrong way. One person who voiced his displeasure is former head coach Bruce Boudreau, who unleashed a passionate rant following the trade. Boudreau, known for his tough, no-nonsense approach, didn't hold back, and his sentiments have been echoed by others around the league, with McGroarty being labeled a "red flag" by some this summer.
It drives me nuts, you want to go out there and punch him in the head to be honest, because listen how can we like I mean you went through it, I went through it, all the older guys have gone through it, you got to come and make the team, you can't be given the spot right away, he said.
I was reading that about McGroarty today that they wouldn't guarantee, Winipeg wouldn't guarantee him a spot at the start of the season and that's one of the reasons he wanted to get traded, it's it just drives me crazy, I just think you have to earn your earn your spot...You have to go in there and earn a spot rather than come in and have the spot already there.
Ultimately, McGroarty's future in Pittsburgh will determine how this situation is remembered. If he performs well on the ice, his antics during the 2024 offseason may be forgotten. However, if he struggles, the backlash could follow him for some time.
