NHL fans were outraged after a group of Toronto Maple Leafs supporters disrupted the 13-second moment of silence honouring the late Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau.

The loss of the Gaudreau brothers was a tragedy that shook both their family and the hockey community. Matthew, a beloved Columbus Blue Jackets forward, and Johnny were remembered as great players and even better people. Since their passing, the league has made every effort to honour their memory, with teams across the NHL airing a memorial video followed by 13 seconds of silence during the 2024-25 preseason.
Teams like the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins upheld the tribute with the respect it deserved. However, during the Leafs' preseason opener against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Arena, some fans used the moment of silence to shout support for their team. While cheering for your team is expected, this was not the appropriate time. The incident left many fans disappointed with the lack of respect shown.
Adding to the frustration, the Maple Leafs lost the game 6-5 in overtime. Their next matchup against the Senators will be at the Canadian Tire Centre, where fans will hope for a more respectful atmosphere. Whether those who disrupted the tribute learned anything remains to be seen.
