According to reports, the Columbus Blue Jackets have decided that they will be buying out the final year of Adam Boqvist's contract and in order to do so, have placed him on unconditional waivers on Sunday afternoon.
The first year of Boqvist's buyout will give the Columbus Blue Jackets a cap hit of $-66,666 and in year two, it's set to be $533,334.
Boqvist, 23, had ten points (one goal, nine assists), zero penalty minutes and was a minus-eight in 35 games for Columbus this season. The Falun, Sweden native was selected eighth overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018, but has spent the last three seasons in Columbus after being traded to them as part of the Seth Jones deal.
Given Boqvist's age and potential, there will be a ton of interest in him on the free agent market starting tomorrow afternoon and among those teams should be Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks need a top-four defenceman, with the departure of Nikita Zadorov, and even if Boqvist can't fill that role, he would be a pretty solid depth option for Rick Tocchet.
