LATEST | McDavid's recent comments about future in Edmonton leaves fans on edge
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has three years remaining on his current contract and understandably, he's not focusing on his next deal anytime soon.
In a recent interview with Sportsnet's Marc Spector, McDavid opened up about his future in Edmonton. He said that he loves playing in the city and is comfortable there and that while he doesn't want to raise eyebrows or anything, but he has to reassess where he is in his life once his contract is up a.
"I love playing in Edmonton, and I truly feel at home there. Lauren also enjoys being in Edmonton. Many aspects align for us in Edmonton. We are very comfortable there. However, that being said, it's three years down the road. We need to assess where our lives are at and proceed from there.
I don't say this to raise eyebrows or cause panic. It's just the reality. But I genuinely love playing in Edmonton, and I am fully committed to winning here with this group...
And we're going to see it through."
The Oilers will have plenty of decisions to make over the coming years as not only is McDavid's contract up, Leon Draisaitl's is up in 2025 and he's eligible to sign an extension in July 2024. With the NHL's salary cap expected to make big jumps over the next couple of summers, there's no doubt that both McDavid and Draisaitl will earn over $14 million AAV on their new contracts.
The 2023-24 season is a big one for the Edmonton Oilers as they look to take that next step and make it to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006, with McDavid and Draisaitl being significant factors in any success the team has this year.
