In a post on social media on Thursday, TSN hockey insider Chris Johnston shared that the Edmonton Oilers have placed defenseman Travis Dermott on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.
The move comes one day after the Edmonton Oilers claimed 24-year-old defenseman Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins.
Dermott, a native of Newmarket, Ontario, has appeared in 10 games this season with the Edmonton Oilers where he's gone point-less, along with two penalty minutes and is a minus-three.
The 27-year-old went unsigned all summer after becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, but was able to land a professional tryout (PTO) with Edmonton, which he turned into a one-year deal for the 2024-25 season.
Travis Dermott spent parts of two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, who acquired him from the Toronto Maple Leafs in March of 2022 for a third-round draft pick.
During his time in Vancouver, Dermott appeared in 18 games where he put up three points (two goals, one assist), two penalty minutes and was a plus-one.
While the Vancouver Canucks are looking more for a top-four defenseman than depth, is there a chance they could still attempt to bring Travis Dermott back?
It's pretty unlikely, especially considering that the Vancouver Canucks currently sit 18th on the National Hockey League's waiver order, which is determined by the standings in reverse.
You can never have enough depth in this league, that's for sure, but with Noah Juulsen playing well and Derek Forbort returning from injury, it doesn't seem like there could be a fit for Travis Dermott.
Stranger things have happened though, so we'll have to wait and see at 11 am PT on Friday if Travis Dermott is claimed by another NHL club or if he'll be sent to the American Hockey League.
