The Montreal Canadiens are expected to trade pending UFA Sean Monahan before the March 8 trade deadline.

TSN Insider Darren Dreger says the Habs will trade him to a contender, honouring a previous agreement when he was acquired from the Calgary Flames along with a 1st round pick.

They had an agreement that said we will trade you when the time is right to a contending team or a team of your choice... I wouldn't be surprised if Monahan was among the first forwards to get dealt before the deadline.

While not as exciting an add as a Jake Guentzel or Elias Lindholm, the centreman could be an option for the Canucks as they seek a top 6 forward.

He can play all three forward positions, is 57.1% on faceoffs and has 24 points in 41 games.

However, Monahan has dealt with injuries in each of the four previous seasons, and was limited to 25 games last season.

He only makes $1.9 million this season, and while he's healthy his injury history could limit the return.

The Canucks could more easily make a deal work with his low salary, and if the team elects to use Pettersson on J.T Miller's wing - they'll be looking for a 2nd line centre upgrade on Pius Suter.
