There's a big change coming to the New York Islanders' front office this summer after the announcement that Lou Lamoirello will not be returning.
It's been a busy week around the National Hockey League with changes on the coaching front and in the front office and the Vancouver Canucks
could enter the mix, if they end up moving on from Rick Tocchet, with a decision expected at some point this week.
Elsewhere around the league, one of the NHL's longest-serving front office members, Lou Lamoriello, is now without a job following an announcement from the New York Islanders today.
New York Islanders not renewing Lou Lamoirello's contract
After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second time in the last four seasons and only winning a collective three postseason games in 2023 and 2024, the New York Islanders have decided to make a change at the top.
In a press release on the team's website, the New York Islanders announced that they will not be renewing the contract of General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Lou Lamoriello.
The Islanders thanked Lou Lamoriello for his services over the last seven seasons and shared that Operating Partner John Collins will begin the search for a new General Manager immediately.
"The New York Islanders organization announced today that Lou Lamoriello's contract as President and General Manager will not be renewed. Effective immediately, Operating Partner John Collins will lead a search to find the next General Manager.
The Islanders extend a heartfelt thank you to Lou Lamoriello for his extraordinary commitment over the past seven years. His dedication to the team is in line with his Hall of Fame career." the Islanders said.
Lamoriello, 82, has given his entire life to the game of hockey, which earned him induction into the Hall of Fame in the builder's category back in 2009.
The Johnston, Rhode Island native has spent nearly 40 years in the National Hockey League as an executive working for the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders.
It's going to be interesting to see what comes next for Lou Lamoriello, whether that's another job in the National Hockey League or if he decides that now is the time to retire. It wouldn't be much of a shock to anyone if he did end up finding a new team in the months ahead.
