Contract negotiations between the Vancouver Canucks and top prospect Tom Willander have hit some speed bumps, and suddenly the Boston University product's future in Vancouver is in some doubt.
While all talks pointed towards Willander joining either Vancouver or Abbotsford to end the season following the conclusion of his year with BU, the 20 year old made
the surprising decision to head back to Sweden after concluding his year with Boston University.
Tom Willander's advisor casts doubt on future in Vancouver
While the Canucks 2024-25 season was about as far from what they were hoping for as possible, many fans were at least looking forward to the signing and debut of 2023 10th overall pick Tom Willander.
However, Canucks Insider Rick Dhaliwal has now reported that Willander's advisor Todd Diamond has cast doubt on the future, saying his client is unhappy with what the Canucks have put forward.
Diamond even implies that while Willander has been excited to turn pro, negotiations may be changing the plans for his future.
Our intent was/is to turn pro, but if we don't agree on a contract that Tom and his family are comfortable with, returning to BU and other situations become possible over the next few seasons.
The hope is still for the Canucks to negotiate a contract ahead of the start of next season, it looks like less of a sure thing than ever.
With more and more college prospects choosing to play out their entire eligibility and choose their destination, the Canucks front office has officially been put on watch.
