A former Vancouver Canuck has landed on the waiver wire less than two weeks into the season.

After suffering an injury in the preseason which has kept him on the sidelines for nearly a month, former Vancouver Canucks forward Matthew Highmore is ready to return to action, but will be doing so in the American Hockey League.

Before he can be sent down to the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators, Ottawa needed to place him on waivers, which they did at 2 pm ET this afternoon, According to Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch.

"The #Sens placed winger Matthew Highmore on waivers today at 2 PM to send him to Belleville. Was placed on IR at the end of the preseason." Garrioch said.

Highmore, 28, joined the Vancouver Canucks organization in April 2021 after being dealt to them by the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Adam Gaudette.

The Halifax, Nova Scotia native 64 games for the Vancouver Canucks between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, registering 17 points (eight goals, nine assists), 16 penalty minutes and was a plus-one. At the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, Highmore was set to become a restricted free agent, however the Canucks decided not to issue him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. That summer, he signed with the St. Louis Blues before joining Ottawa in 2023.

We should find out just after 2 pm ET (11 am PT) if Matthew Highmore clears waivers and will be assigned to the American Hockey League. The San Jose Sharks get the first crack at making a waiver claim on Highmore given that they finished dead-last in the entire NHL last year, but it's probably a safe bet that he'll clear and join the Belleville Senators tomorrow afternoon.
