LATEST | The verdict is in regarding an Elias Lindholm extension

Patrik Allvin pulled a huge move for his Canucks earlier this week, the GM fetched the best centerman on the market and recognized his team's efforts. Elias Lindholm is a pending free agent and with the way things were trending in Calgary, there had been no indication that a future existed for him there.
AN EXTENSION: PART OF THE INITIAL TRANSACTION?
The NHL insider first broke the news that Elias Lindholm and the Canucks had not discussed a potential extension prior to closing the deal. Which strongly suggests that the Canucks are fine with the possibility that he might end up being a rental and could be leaving once the season ended:
''There's no extension in the works for Elias Lindholm as part of this Vancouver trade being worked on. He would be going as a rental at least at the outset.''
A PLACE FOR LINDHOLM IN THE CANUCKS FUTURE?
Despite the fact that there hasn't been talks in that regard thus far, the team's President Jim Rutherford confirmed that it was in the team's plans to discuss an extension and that it was always part of the plan to keep him around. However, his comments strongly suggested that the were comfortable making this deal even if he winds up not sticking around:
Rutherford: ''Lindholm could be a rental. He could be a long term guy. In an ideal world, we'd like to keep him.''
LINDHOLN LOOKING AT A HEFTY PAY RAISE?
The Swede centerman was rumored to have rejected a $72M offer from the Flames, but just like Zadorov, he confirmed that no offers had been made and no conversation had happened in that regard. Currently commanding a $4.85M cap hit, the 29-year-old will be looking at a raise and a potentially, really long term deal.
This is where things are going to tricky for the Canucks. As they already have a 30-year-old signed for the next 7 years, they may have to be wary about inking another aging forward to a long-term deal. Perhaps Lindholm will love Vancouver so much that he'll agree to take a pay cut?
