Tocchet makes an exciting statement on the camp's surprise: Arshdeep Bains
Arshdeep Bains has been a stand-out at Canucks' camp so far. After five WHL seasons, he inked an NHL deal with the Canucks as an undrafted free-agent and now he's making the Canucks' scouts look like geniuses.
Bains had a tough start to his WHL career. Between his first two seasons, in 2017-18 and 2018-19, he scored just 25 points in 103 games. This left the 22-year-old undrafted in the 2019 draft. The B.C Native was a late bloomer and put up three solid WHL seasons following his draft year.
His last WHL season was so impressive that the Canucks signed him mid-way through. Bains scored 43 goals, adding 69 assists for 112 points. He was an offensive star, and the Canucks hoped he could become a player.
In 2022-23, Bains played in his professional season with the Abbotsford Canucks. Bains was able to make some excellent progression in his game. He now plays a great two-way game, an energy player who can go up and down the line-up. Bains recorded 38 points in 66 games and made an impression with the Abbotsford Canucks coaching staff.
Rick Tocchet spoke about Bains, saying, "I didn't know much about him...[The Abbotsford coaches] love him, and now, as I started watching him, I'm like, Oh, man, this kid's a player.' There's potential there, so you want to give a guy like [Bains] a shot..." (Canucks Army)
Bains will have to fight every step of the way to get out of camp as a Canuck, but at this point, I wouldn't count him out, either. We will see what the Canucks have planned for Bains' development.
