Aatu Raty makes a bold statement on his future: It's promising
With training camp behind them, the Vancouver Canucks now turn their attention to preseason action, starting Tuesday evening when they host the Seattle Kraken.
For many players, tonight's game offers a chance to shake off the summer rust and gear up for their upcoming NHL roles. For others, it's an opportunity to showcase their skills and prove they belong in the Vancouver Canucks lineup. One player eager to stand out is Aatu Räty, who aims to build on a strong finish to his 2023-24 season, spent entirely with the Abbotsford Canucks. There, he made significant strides in his development, posting a career-high 52 points to rank third on the team.
Early line rushes suggest Räty will have a solid chance to make an impact, as he remains alongside his training camp linemates, Conor Garland and Nils Höglander.
«Obviously, two really good players,» Räty told reporters on Tuesday. «I thought we found some good chemistry out there. And in training camp, I thought the training camp game and all the practices went well. So, I'm really excited.»
In addition to the top-six minutes, Räty will have the chance to display his vision and underrated shot on the secondary power play unit, working alongside Linus Karlsson and Christian Wolanin.
Head coach Rick Tocchet has confirmed that Räty and fellow prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki will be given "three to four games" during the team's six-game preseason schedule. Tonight marks the first of several opportunities for Räty to prove he's ready for the next step in his career and secure a full-time spot with the Vancouver Canucks.
«It doesn't matter whether you are, you know, 21 or 31, you just want to make the team,» Räty said. «Obviously, as a 21-year-old, I know I have a lot of room to improve and a lot of time to do so.
«But, at the same time, I think I've put in the hours, and I feel like I'm ready for it.»
«It's just about keeping at it, you know? I just gotta keep working,» he mentions. «I think if I do the right things every day, it's going to happen eventually. I'm not too worried about when it's going to happen. I just know if I keep working, it's going to happen.»
