The Abbotsford Canucks announced a first set of cuts as they near closure on their training camp. The AHL's season debuts on October 13th and their numbers have to be down by then.
Among the 10 players that were sent down from Abbotsford to Kalamazoo, the former third round pick Josh Bloom is once again scratched. As a 20-year-old last year he cracked the AHL's roster, but was eventually sent back down to the OHL in order to build his confidence up. This year's camp wasn't any better as he finds his way straight to Kalamazoo.
Joining Bloom are Ben Berard, Lee Lapid, Jermaine Loewen and Zach Okabe, defencemen Joe Arntsen and Zach Berzolla, Mark Cheremeta, Davis Codd and goaltender Jonathan Lemieux to Kalamazoo (ECHL).
The opinions were mitigated surrounding the 20-year-old netminder and Canucks 2022 5th round pick Ty Young. Eligible to return to the WHL for another year, it seemed that the Canucks' plan was to have him turn pro and head to Kalamazoo for plenty of ice time. However, circumstances changed the plan and he might be backing Nikita Tolopilo in Abbotsford.
The Canucks were hoping to have Arturs Silovs and Thatcher Demko / Kevin Lankinen in the NHL. While Nikita Tolopilo would be getting the help of Jiri Patera in the AHL, the fact that Patera ended up being claimed by the Bruins, changed the Canucks plans.
As of right now, Ty Young will be starting with the Canucks in Abbotsford, unless Patrik Allvin acquires a goaltender prior to the start of the AHL season. Patera was waived on Sunday, could he already be on a plane back?
