LATEST | Huge revelation emerges regarding Elias Pettersson and his new deal: It says a lot about him
Discount deals are crucial to every contending team in a hard-cap league.
While it's not a massive pay cut, Elliotte Friedman said on Monday's 32 Thoughts podcast that Elias Pettersson left money on the table in his new extension with Vancouver.
He says taking less will allow the Canucks to do more and be better down the road.
Pettersson didn't take the highest number he could... he still took a number that's going to allow the Canucks to do some other things, like Quinn Hughes, when it's his time. The Canucks captain has three more years after this one when he'll likely be due for a big raise.
Having Pettersson locked up allows the Canucks to move on to negotiations with other players like Filip Hronek and be more clear on the team's direction ahead of this week's deadline.
However, Friedman noted that Elias Pettersson becoming the highest-paid Swede, a $100K higher AAV than William Nylander, is no accident.
