Is former Canucks forward J.T. Miller pursuing a pro career in golf?

After failing to make the NHL playoffs just days ago, New York Rangers star forward J.T. Miller is trying to qualify for this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club

Nick Horwat of Breakaway On Si writes that although a disappointing season for the New York Rangers has officially come to a close, the lack of a playoff run opens the door for one of their key forwards to pursue a different challenge. J.T. Miller is shifting his focus to golf, entering local qualifying rounds in hopes of earning a spot in the upcoming 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont.
"Miller is one of a few big-name non-golf athletes who are in the running for a spot at the U.S. Open. Alongside Miller are former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and former NFL running back Danny Woodhead." -Horwat

This isn't Miller's first attempt at earning a spot in the U.S. Open. He previously competed in qualifying rounds in the Pittsburgh area in both 2022 and 2023. Clearly, Miller has a strong passion for golf as well.

He currently has a listed 0.2 HCP index 👀
Here's what Miller had to say when asked about his decision in trying to qualify...
"I wasn't into this expecting to move on or anything. I just wanted to see if I could compete with these guys. I'm a competitor in all things. It doesn't need to be professional sports; any activity, really, I like to compete.» -Miller

The multi-sport athlete will have another opportunity to qualify in 2025 and potentially compete alongside some of the world's top golfers. Rory McIlroy recently completed his long-awaited career Grand Slam with a victory at the Masters, while reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is set to defend his title at Oakmont.
It'll be interesting to see what happens moving forward!
