Pettersson, 25, has yet to sign a significant long-term contract with the Canucks, which has led to some uncertainty amongst the fan base relating to his future with the team. The Swede's first several seasons in Vancouver have certainly been a rollercoaster in terms of injury luck, team performance, and outlook for his future.
The Sundsvall, Sweden native ranks 9th in NHL scoring with 73 points just three behind teammate J.T. Miller. He is also notably a restricted free agent at this season's end, and how Vancouver performs in relation to their high expectations surely has some affect on the contract situation.
Despite little to no progression regarding contract talks, the team has reportedly made offers to Pettersson and his representatives, and now the ball is in his court. Elliotte Friedman reported that the team has made offers «in the 11s, in the 12s [in millions of dollars]». However, they await a decision from Pettersson, which has not come yet.
On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman firmly stated that Pettersson had been made an offer by Vancouver valued at over 12 million dollars annually, to which Pettersson had not said yes or no to. Perhaps he is simply waiting to progress contract talks after the season.
Friedman emphasizes the team's willingness to pay Pettersson significant money, and that the pressure is moving to Pettersson's camp to make a decision. Both the Canucks and Pettersson's representatives did not specify a particular monetary value with Friedman.
