MAJOR | Canucks issue a statement regarding the veteran Phil Kessel
The rumour mill sparked when the forward Phil Kessel was spotted in Vancouver earlier tonight.
There had been lots of discussions suggesting the Canucks and Kessel had engaged in conversations, and when the team's head coach offered his views, everybody was convinced the Canucks would be making a move sooner or later.
The Canucks took matters into their hands and adressed the Kessel upfront. Patrik Allvin issued a statement confirming that Kessel was indeed in Vancouver to meet with the Canucks:
"Phil has made his way to Vancouver and will work out in Abbotsford this week. «
The Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal then revealed the team's plans in regards to the veteran. According to his source, Kessel will prove that he still belongs at the game's very best level before he's awarded a contract:
Believe the plan is to work out Kessel, skate him and go from there, if all good and then sign.
Kessel, 36, was the 5th overall pick in the 2006 Draft. Since then, he has participated in 1286 regular season games, registering 992 points. He then added nine post-season runs, played 100 games, collected 83 points and won three Stanley Cups.
While he may not be at his career's peak, Tocchet stated, there's value to his experience, stature, and goalscoring ability. It'll be exciting to see where this thing goes.
